Description
Discover the historic east side of old Amsterdam, once a bustling hub of global trade and home to a thriving Jewish community from the 1600s.
Join me on a walking tour through the old Jewish district, Jodenbuurt, where maritime history and captivating stories await.
As we wander through the docklands, alleys, and canals, I'll unveil the tales echoing within these streets.
Dive into the legacy of the Dutch fleet, once the world's mightiest, and uncover stories of the eternal Anglo-Dutch wars.
We'll explore the former Navy Warehouse, now the National Maritime Museum, which played a pivotal role in a significant defeat for the British Navy.
Museums pepper our route, offering glimpses into Amsterdam's vibrant past:
⚬ NEMO Science Museum, housed in a ship-shaped green building, resting on what was once a waterway connecting Amsterdam to the sea.
⚬ Hermitage Amsterdam, showcasing Dutch artwork collected by Russian Tsars.
⚬ Rembrandt House Museum, a snapshot of the 1600s.
⚬ Verzetsmuseum Amsterdam, offering insights into local life during WWII.
On this Amsterdam journey, you'll:
⚬ Immerse in the traditions of Sephardic Jews at the Portuguese Synagogue, once the world's largest.
⚬ Understand how WWII nearly erased Amsterdam's Jewish community.
⚬ Pay respects at memorials like the National Holocaust Names Monument and Memorial to Auschwitz Victims.
⚬ Explore Waterlooplein Market, one of the city's largest flea markets.
⚬ Discover Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam and ARTIS zoo, among the world's oldest.

Outstanding tour with great information, stories and tips. It is a long tour and it took me way over 120 minutes - also I stopped several times to shop and grab coffee. I cannot recommend this enough. Thank you for making these!

This was a great tour and well worth the money. Perfect mix of history and modern day context. A great prelude to the Anne Frank House. I only made it to the resistance museum (visited for an hour or so) because I ran out of time but this tour could definitely last the whole day if you plan to make more stops or spend time at the museums I’ll definitely do more of these now that I’ve discovered the app.

Fascinating tour just the right length and really brought the city to life. Finished just across from our hotel so thanks for that as well!
